You see, I should be working on my presentation for Boston right now, but instead I have stumbled upon a little jewel of an MTV production called Fat Camp. I will go on record right now and say that MTV documentaries are great: True Life, Made etc. They all hold me in total tv captivity. Thank god there isn't a station devoted to MTV documentaries or I would get nothing done.

Finished reading The Devil in the White City and both of us just finished watching a documentary on the Expo. Now we both have been looking at different objects that were sold at the fair on ebay. Also found out today that it was accepted into the How International Annual AND was awarded an Outstanding Achievement Award and will have a whole page devoted to it with a small article. It's Thumbsucker vs. They Harder They Come, this week. There's been a lot of talking around the house about these two films and a lot of it's been in Jamaican accents. It's tough to choose a winner, but since The Harder They Come is so good that we purposely turned it into a mini-series by watching it in 20 minute installments, and since the movie's in English but it still had to be subtitled because of their impenitrable Jamaican accents, it's gonna be declared "Screen Media of the Week", Mon.

Thumbsucker was at the local theater last night. The local independent theater has been open since this summer and is already on life support. This is evidenced by the fact that all of the seats were empty except for the four of us. Not too many Mike Mills fans 'round here. I felt pretty special today at the Ice & Water station when a truckload of Trump Ice bottled water pulled into our parking lot. I meant to grab a bottle of it so that I can drink it during The Apprentice but I forgot. See that guy loading ice into his El Camino? I should be helping him with that but I'm taking photos of the water instead.

Well, it's not media hype. The damage along Highway 90 is just unbelievable.

Today I volunteered at the convention center at an Ice & Water distribution point, one of seven in the Biloxi / Gulfport area. Many people here are still without proper water, power, jobs, etc. But people were in surprisingly good moods. Hundreds of cars came around for ice & water and everyone expressed tons of appreciation. My arms feel like spaghetti noodles from lifting cases of water and bags of ice into the backs of peoples' cars.

Blogging From the Mississippi Coast

I'm in Biloxi this week with a relief effort. I've seen a lot of damage but haven't been to the worst hit areas yet. I'm staying here which is located here. We've got power, water, internet, AC, and everything else in this facility. It's basically an office building that happens to have a couple of showers. We brought our own food.

I came straight south into Gulfport, then over to Biloxi. In Bay Springs, the damage first became noticeable. A little later, in Laurel, the first real destruction was visible. At Hattiesburg the trees were down by the hundreds, but the I couldn't see any structural damage. Further south, at the home of the world's largest rocking chair, the roof was blown off and the rafters were visible of the building behind the rocking chair. By the time we reached Wiggins it has become unusual to see roofs that DIDN'T have damage. I could tell that we were getting near the coast because from that point on the all trees have very few leaves on them. With each mile comes an increasing amount of damage. By the time we reach Gulfport, any building you look at has damage...anything that is/was flimsy....signs, billboards, poorly built buildings, carports, road signs...all damaged. However, the solid structures don't look all that bad. For example, we drove by a lot of gas stations that had the roof over the pumps completely blown away...yet the main building was fine and the places were very busy. We drove by strip malls that looked fine and the parking lot was full and busy, yet two blocks down the road was a similar strip mall that was completely blown out and we were trying to determine what business were in that strip mall a month ago. We were looking at the debris piles trying to recognize fragments of signs. In another case, there was a trailer sales lot with one trailer turned and twisted on its side and another completely destroyed, yet the other 100 trailers relatively untouched. All of this was only caused by the winds. The total destruction was caused by the surge. Tomorrow I'm headed further toward the beach and will encoutner that. Some people from my group went for a brief walk a little while ago and encountered a soccer facility whose roof they could see 300 to 400 yards away. Should be interesting tomorrow.

I'm going to be helping with the Distribution Center all day tomorrow and then on work on a salvage operation on Thursday. More about that later. I'll try to have some photos tomorrow.

Last night we returned back to town to find out that we had just missed a tornado that ripped through our neighborhood. This makes tornado number 1 and hurricane number 4 (Ivan, Dennis, Katrina, Rita) since we've been here. Not that I'm counting. The tornado damaged twelve buildings on campus. It flipped a few cars and blew out the windows of a line of parked cars. Mostly, it downed and twisted coutnless trees in its path. There's small debris everywhere. The damage path continues down the street that we drive many times everyday. Luckily, it barely missed 3 Art Department faculty members' houses. And I mean narrowly. In one case, it passed between two professors' houses who live across the road from each other. Unfortunately, it did extensive damage to a trailer park down the road from us. It over turned at least one trailer home. Next to that, it ripped another from its foundations and threw it over a small bluff with a person(s) inside. We walked the scene this morning and just could not believe that so much destruction could happen so quickly and without warning. Oh, and speaking of warnings...did the sirens go off? They sure did, after the tornado had passed.

Some chairs I came across today in an old Quonset hut gym on campus. I liked the blue and brown combination. The old gym serves as a storage facility which is where these chairs and more like them reside. I really doubt that they'll ever be used again which is too bad because they're in great condition.

15 drawings (out of 30) of different objects that I have bought. I still need to add text to most of these. These are drawn onto wooden slats over white paint. The zine will be xeroxed onto pink paper and will contain all of the drawings. I want to shrink wrap a zine with each panel and include a painted nail that you can hang the wooden slat with. I shot this in Jefferson City at the Salvation Army. I might add this on Obsessive Consumption or use it as a front page image. I was more impressed with the structure of the Jeff City Salvation Army than the actual object offerings. All faux wood (which I still have an obsession for). This household has been "getting to work" on the Up Series films. In 1964, interviews were taped with a group of British 7-year-olds in the documentary 7-Up. Director Michael Apted then caught up with those individuals every seven years and subsequently produced the films 7+7 UP, 21 Up, 28 Up, 35 Up, and lastly 42 Up which landed at our house yesterday. So, I guess we've reached the end for now. But as luck would have it, 2005 is a seventh year in the series and 49 Up is supposedly in pre-production. Hopefully, as I write this, the new one is being taped. After that, however, it'll be 7 more years before the next film.

Oxford, Mississippi was the destination on Saturday for the Black Keys who are on Oxford-based Fat Possum Records. It's about an hour and change from our camp. Oxford is known for: Ole Miss, William Faulkner, John Grisham, and having a thriving classic Southern town square. The are a couple of notable things on the square: Nielsen's, the oldest still-operating department store in Mississippi (est. 1839) and Square Books, the bookstore and galactic center of the Southern literature. Off Square books is the converted warehouse space where they put their sale books. Go to Oxford.

Maben, Mississippi. Gay Burchard's Fruit Stand. When customers aren't visiting with him, Gay sits in the chair in the foreground and watches the 1970's console TV which is situated between the tables. Gay's cooler is only stocked with Faygo soda, mostly red.

Oxford, MS. Standing on the balcony of Square Books. Lingering, loitering, and waiting for the Black Keys show across the street. They always have books that I want. This time it was a book about the glory years of horseracing and one about the design of paper information wheels.

Here we go; this weekend we went just over the Mississippi/Alabama border to Tuscaloosa. On the way we passed through the towns of Gordo and Reform, Alabama.

Just outside of Gordo, Alabama. C'mon, let's give a hearty salute to the flag.

Nothing in Mississippi ever dries. Especially not during weeks like this one with a siege of storms targeting us. Towels don't dry..wet clothes don't dry...my Chuck Taylors smell like a something died and then was lit on fire. The heavy spring rains have been good for botanical Mississippi though. Everything is turning green so fast that you can just about hear the chlorophyll flowing.

I saw a spider today. My spider phobia has subsided. Unfortunately, it's been replaced by a ghost phobia. I'm 99% sure that a ghost is living in our bathroom. I hope it isn't using my toothbrush.

I came across a map today that indicated that we live in the lower most county of the Appalachian Region. Well, you wouldn't know it from looking out the window. There's not a mountain anywhere near us. My guess is that it's due to rivers and tributaries and the way that science-folk determine such things.

Also interesting...well, I think it's interesting anyway...is that in our town is the Southern-most outpost of the Tennessee Valley Authority. For some reason, I've always had a fascination with the TVA. I guess because it's a piece of Depression era living history.

While some girls spend their spring break taking their shirts off, I spent mine making t-shirts to put on.

I printed last night.

I liked this one so much that I wore it today.

hearts and dollar signs...kind of hard to see, but the two on the left are covered with a pattern of, yep, you guessed it, HEARTS AND DOLLAR SIGNS!

Philadephia, MS

Clifton and I took a 45 minute drive to see Philadelphia, MS.
There wasn't much to see.
This is a water tower.

Martin Luther King visited Philadelphia and stood on the courthouse steps after the killings of three civil rights workers in 1964. Simon and Garfunkel wrote a song about the three workers (he was my brother?). Watch Mississippi Burning (starring my favorite old man actor of the moment, gene hackman) it is all about the tragic events that took place that summer. Wilem (or however you spell his first name) Defoe is in it too. yessss.

The first time I visited this place was in 1997 or was is 1998... on a school trip for a civil rights history class that I was taking. I NEVER would have thought that seven years later I would be living less than an hour away.

This is a seafood/steakhouse that was in the middle of no where on the way to philly. It was located at the end of a road. Very strange.

We finally caught up with our last Netflix shipment.
We have been so busy these past couple of weeks that we have been neglecting our ever so important movie watching.

I watched The Conversation (1974, Francis Ford Coppela) with Gene Hackman and the ever so wonderful, ever so tragically dead John Cazale. Cliff fell asleep and I stayed up and just freaking devoured the film. I LOVE Gene Hackman. I LOVE him in everything that he is in (well, maybe not Welcome To Moosport with Ray Romano...but I haven't seen it, so I am just making assumptions...but seriously Gene, are you really going to make the piece of turd your last movie? Do you want to end a BRILLIANT film career with that?? I digress). And John Cazale wasn't as gross as he usually is in other films. He just was a cool, dorky dude. Again, I love so many movies from the 1970s...watching this just only reinforced my love even more.

Last night we made an awesome dinner, I bought a bottle of wine and we watched Mystery Train (1989, Jim Jarmusch). Again, another great movie. I love Jim Jarmusch and I love Netflix because we can get the movies that we want without being chained to our local mississippi blockbuster or our freaking mississippi movie theater...though I so so so miss going to the theater and watching movies. That is one of my most favorite things to do. I frantically check the movie listings every week in hopes that a film that I want to watch is going to be shown, but I am only saddened when my options are either a. a shitty horror movie (what is UP with the spread of BAD horror films lately? I mean, I will totally go and watch a good one, but BOOGEYMAN? THE CURSE?) b. some freaking winnie the pooh movie or a movie about a dog named after a dirty grocery store (at least the winn dixie in starkville was the most filthy grocery store I had ever been in) c. a will smith rom-com
THAT IS IT! OUR OPTIONS! AHHHHH!!!!

I got up early this morning and drove down Blackjack Road to shoot some photos for a current project for Architecture. We need to document some examples of progressive architecture and/or planning in and around our corner of Mississippi. Yeah right.

ugh! I bought $60.00 worth of candy (school's money, not mine in case anyone cares) for my graphic design two class. Our next project is a candy packaging project and I wanted to surround the class with all types of candy packaging. We devoured it and then we all were on an amazing sugar high and then we all crashed. It was quite the bonding experience.

And to keep along with the theme of today, cliff and I are going to columbus tonight to see a traveling exhibition from the smithsonian about FOOD.

Then we are going to the BAM! (Books a Million) to read magazines and not buy them.
and then to find a hotel bar and have a drink.
we have decided that hotel bars are the new hanging out places.
It used to be the burger king that was in a large log cabin. It was always empty and it had a HUGE fireplace. It used to be an bank, but then a burger king. That was totally going to be our hang out place, but they closed it.
I really wanted to make the bank/burger king my new hideout. It didn't even smell like fast food. It smelled like it was the best place on earth.
Certain letters in the sign were burned out so at night the marquee read BURGE.
